Netflix has recently revealed the trailer for its latest Kuwaiti series The Exchange, inspired by the true events of the 1980’s Kuwait stock market. The series is set to be released on Netflix on February 8th, 2023.
The Exchange follows the story of Farid and Munira. Two women who to take over the stock market in 1980’s Kuwait. It is a story of two strong women who want to disrupt the corrupt boy’s club and break free of any stereotypes. Starring Rawan Mahdi, Mona Hussain, and Hussain Almahdi, The Exchange walks us through these women’s journey of navigating a male-dominated industry while Kuwait’s stock market was booming.
Meet the Characters
Farida is a recently divorced woman who wants to prove that she can provide for her daughter after she was a devoted housewife and out of work for the last 13 years. As a result, Farida and Munira come together to be the first women at the Kuwaiti Stock Exchange. In the trailer, Farida says “I live in two separate worlds. My world’s and my family’s. It’s time to depend on myself”. Therefore, gives us a lot of insight into Farida’s character. Also, more insight on how she needs to come out of her shell.
Munira is an independent, smart, and sassy woman who’s passionate about her career and her independence. Therefore, she is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Munira works as a clerk for the Bank of Tomorrow’s Trading Division at the Kuwait Stock Exchange. She takes Farida’s hands and helps her on her road to independence. As a result, they embark on their journey together, as women, sisters, and powerful female figures.
About the Exchange
Together, Farida and Munira go on a mission to break the stereotypes of the male-dominated financial market. The Exchange is a journey of sisterhood, perseverance, ambition, and strength. It is a representation of women in every place and every time. Moreover, it is a powerful representation of true Kuwaiti storytelling.
The Exchange is created and written by Nadia Ahmad, Anne Sobel and Adam Sobel. The show is produced by Abdullah Boushahri and stars a cast of Kuwaiti talents including Mohammed Al Mansour, Faisal Alamiri, and others.
Abdullah Boushahri said, “Having grown up in Kuwait and being surrounded by independent women my whole life, this production is one that is close to my heart. Rawan and Mona perfectly depict the struggles women experienced back in the 80’s. I can’t wait for the world to see their characters’ story unfold on the big screen. Besides the plot, I am excited for the audience to see how we brought this era to life. It brings together local and international expertise in a high-production masterpiece, shot and produced entirely in Kuwait.
The six-episode series, directed by Jasem AlMuhanna and Karim El Shenawy, will be available on Netflix in 190 countries on 8th February 2023.
