We can’t stress enough on the fact that we love how many new comics are emerging in Egypt these days. The art scene is booming, and taking Egyptian comic books to new heights. Just as we’ve stated before, some new comic artists are shaking things up in the scene.
“It’s fresh, edgy and its protagonist is a female superhero that goes by the name Lamis.”
The comic we’re talking about this time is an up and coming, all-Egyptian, comic. It’s fresh, edgy and its protagonist is a female superhero that goes by the name Lamis. The comic is drawn by Hamed Yahia, and its story was written by Safia Baraka.
Surprisingly, the option of turning her story into a comic book wasn’t the first thing Safia and Hamed have considered, “we first wanted to write a movie script, but this kind of production would have been too expensive”, Safia tells, “then Hamed drew the comic, but when we tried to print it we realized we needed a lot of permits and security approvals and someone from the journalists’ syndicate had to be involved. So we decided on online publishing”. This is how Lamis’s new home was decided to be Koshk Comics. All you need to do is download the application on your mobile phone or tablet and you’ll be able to view the comic panel by panel.
In a few days, the first of what hopefully will be many issues will be published on Koshk Comics. The main story is about Lamis, a young lady whose tough upbringing had situated her in the drug dealing business. An accident takes place and she somehow gains superpowers. It features a gloomy, dark presence in the teaser trailer and we absolutely love it!
“since he was young he used to read all kinds of comics like Superman and Spiderman, back when they were translated into Arabic” Safia Baraka
Hamed is a director, who has always had a passion for comics, “since he was young he used to read all kinds of comics like Superman and Spiderman, back when they were translated into Arabic”, Safia says, “when they stopped, he started reading them in English and would always look for them”. Safia is also interested in comics. She is a producer and has worked as an event organizer and assistant director before. They used to work together in the same agency and now they are collaborating on something which they are both passionate about.
“this had to happen. Here in Egypt women are discriminated against the most” Safia Baraka
Choosing a female protagonist and making her a superhero was done on purpose, “this had to happen. Here in Egypt women are discriminated against the most”, Safia says, “so you constantly feel like you want to give them support, like you need to tell them that they can do so much”.
The comics are planned out so that they will continue for a while, “I want to really delve into the backstory. So that later on it can be utilized whether they’ll be weekly or monthly editions”, Safia explains. We can’t wait to get our hands on it. We’re positive Lamis will be a nice addition to the already expanding comic book scene in Egypt!
