10 Health Benefits of Having Sex

Sexual intercourse is always a focus of constant curiosity, interest and analysis to the human mind.

Our sexual nature is governed by several factors: anatomical and physiological, environmental and social factors surrounding us, the degree of interaction and relationship with others and finally our cumulative life experience.Medical studies have shown that sexual intercourse helps to raise the level of health and wellness. Having sex in a loving relationship has long-term mental and physical benefits for both men and women.

And let’s not forget the obvious: Having sex is fun. But what might be less obvious is that it’s also good for you mentally and physically.

Let’s review some results of medical studies about the health benefits of sexual intercourse:

1- Stress relief

Having sex could lower both your stress levels and blood pressure.According to many studies, after intercourse our bodies’ produces double the usual rate of the hormone prolactin (the so-called milk hormone) and that amount is significantly more than we produce after masturbation.

The research shows that the effect of this rise in the hormone leads to two things:

Firstly it comforts you mentally and psychologically, as it breaks the effect of the dopamine hormone, whichcause depression and stress. Secondly, it delays the ability to achieve an erection for a period of time.

2- Sex Boosts Immunity

Having sex once or twice a week has been linked with higher levels of an antibody called Immunoglobulin A, which can protect you from getting colds and other infections.

3- Burns Calories

Thirty minutes of sex burns 85 calories or more. If we assume that men or women usually have sex once a week, it means that having sex 52 times a year will contribute to the loss of 4420 calories. This may be a reason to have more sex and less dieting!

4- Improves Heart Health

While some elderly people are concerned about the physical effort of sex and the possibility of getting another stroke, research shows this is not the case.  According to researchers from England, who published their study in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, elderly people who have sex at least once a week did not suffer from a stroke in old age.

They emphasized also that the health benefits of having sex do not end there. They showed that having sex twice or more a week reduced the risk of heart attack by half in comparison to those who had sex once a week.

5- Better Self-Esteem

University of Texas researchers found that boosting self-esteem was one of 237 reasons people have sex.Sexual activity leading to orgasm raises the level of the hormone oxytocin, this hormone raises the level of self-confidence and strengthens the bonds between life partners.

Of course, you don’t have to have lots of sex to feel good about yourself. Your self-esteem is all about you not someone else. But if you’re already feeling good about yourself, a great sex life may help you feel even better.

6- Turn Down Pain

As sex contributes to the increase of the oxytocin hormone, it also increases the endorphin hormone, which is a hormone that produces feelings of pleasure, and helps to reduce pain. So if you feel a headache, or arthritis pain, or PMS symptoms, having sex can soothe those pains.

7- Deeper Intimacy

Having sex and orgasms boosts levels of the oxytocin, the so-called love hormone, which helps people bond and build trust.

In a study of 59 women, researchers checked their oxytocin levels before and after the women hugged their partners. The women had higher oxytocin levels if they had more physical contact with their partner.Higher oxytocin levels have also been linked with a feeling of generosity.

8- Better Sleep

If you’ve been wondering why your guy can be active one minute and snoring the next, that’s because the oxytocin released during orgasm also promotes sleep, research shows.

9- More Ejaculations May Make Prostate Cancer Less

Research shows that frequent ejaculations may lower the risk of getting prostate cancer later in life.

The British Journal of Urology International noted the existence of a link between having sex with a low incidence of prostate cancer. The researchers said: men who have sex 5 times a week, reduced their incidence of prostate cancer by almost one third.

10- Stronger Pelvic Floor Muscles

For women, doing pelvic floor muscle exercises, called Kegels, during sex may mean more pleasure andless chance of incontinence later in life.To do a basic Kegel exercise, tighten the muscles of your pelvic floor as if you’re trying to stop the flow of urine. Count to three, then release.

Finally, many couples believe that intimacy is limited only to the process of penetrative sex and forget to include foreplay and psychological preparation which women need in particular.

Foreplay combines many benefits including making sexual intercourse more comfortable for women.
