Whenever people hear about vegetarians, they think they must be super healthy and happy. Well, I am a vegetarian, and sadly, the reality is that it’s not always that shiny. Here are the downsides of being a vegetarian that you will slowly start discovering yourself. It’s not green and happy all the time.

 

You become that Annoying Person on the Table

Whether it’s a wedding, a dinner party or just lunch at a friend’s house, you either have to tell them in advance that you don’t eat meat, or be an extremely picky eater at the table. It’s an even bigger struggle in Egypt, because almost everything has some kind of meat in it.

Your Hair and Nails will No Longer be Like they Used to

You will slowly start feeling the difference in your hair, nails and skin. You might want to take vitamin supplements to make sure they stay healthy. Still, don’t be surprised if you feel your nails getting brittle, or your hair falling more than usual.

 

Messed up Menstrual Cycle

When you first make the switch to vegetarianism, you might notice a difference in your menstrual cycle; late periods, or periods lighter than normal. This happens to many women especially until your body starts getting used to the change.

 

Eating out is a Real Challenge

Eating out becomes a nightmare, especially in Egypt. Some people don’t really understand the concept of being a vegetarian. You’ll end up having a pizza margarita or penne arabiatta every single time you’re eating out!

 

All the Research you have to do to get your Proteins

Going to the grocery store is no longer the simple errand it used to be. You need to research other foods that are high on protein to balance your diet.

 

Find a New List of Comfort Food

A juicy burger, chicken wings and pepperoni pizza are off the table! You’ll have to start creating your own comfort food for those down days.

Checkups to Make Sure you have No Deficiencies

Having more regular blood checkups is a good idea. It’s a hassle, and it gets boring at first, but it’s vital. Make sure you have no deficiencies especially iron and B12.

 

Gaining Weight?

Yes, it’s very possible. You will feel yourself getting drawn to carbs! Don’t fall into that trap. Find other foods that will make you feel full to avoid gaining weight.
