My Daughter is Being Bullied at School for Her Curly Hair

Kids can be cruel sometimes; especially at school, kids get creative with plain, mean comments and nicknames. Unfortunately, most kids in the history of their school years have had cruel nicknames that stuck forever.

We came across a heartfelt post written by an amazing mother on the Hair Addict Facebook group, sharing her daughter’s battle with bullying at school. Amy Al Housainy’s little angel, Fairouz, was being bullied at school just because she has a unique hairstyle. Let’s be honest, girls with curly hair in our society are looked at differently. They often hear snarky comments like, “are you going to go out like this?” “Try to apply some cream; it will make your hair less frizzy”, “There are many treatments that can make your hair straight”.

“I am not saying I am the perfect mother, I sometimes lose it with my daughter, but I am not going to let anyone tamper with her self-confidence.”

“A girl at my daughter’s school pulled her hair and called it ‘selk mawa3een’,” she says. Her daughter’s story brings back bad memories: Amy herself was bullied at school, “I was always self-conscious about my curly hair; I used to be made fun of at school. There was a girl at school who told me you will never get married,” she says.

Amy has told the school several times that her daughter was getting bullied and the response would always be, “The number of girls are a lot, and this is the parents’ job; we are trying to contain the physical bullying that happens at school,” she explains.

“Mothers should not surrender to the pressure of hair-straightening; they need to tell their daughters they are beautiful the way they are.”

Unfortunately, many girls and mothers are born to believe that beauty equals straight and shiny hair. We can’t blame them; that’s what the media and society have been feeding them for years. “We need to start getting out of the Facebook group bubble, and start creating awareness campaigns to target the children and parents,” she says.

“I am not saying I am the perfect mother, I sometimes lose it with my daughter, but I am not going to let anyone tamper with her self-confidence,” she says.

Some parents even get pressured by their family and friends to expose their little girls to chemicals and excessive heat, in order to meet the foolish beauty standards we were taught to believe. “My friend straightened her daughter’s hair with a bunch of chemicals, which lead to her daughter losing her hair,” Amy says.

“Mothers should not surrender to the pressure of hair-straightening; they need to tell their daughters they are beautiful the way they are. If a mother is not convinced that her daughter is the most beautiful girl in the world, her daughter will never love and accept herself the way she is.”

Let your hair down and embrace your natural beauty!

  1. Unfortunately,we live in a sick society….similar situations happened with both my sons…concerning their dark skin tone…and hair to beleive it or not…and they r boys….not girls……

  2. What to do if the bulling came from the community around me and my parents also. They always tell me that iam not pretty and my father is embarrassed by me. And it makes me feel so down.
