Alexandria is certainly one of the best destinations to visit on a winter weekend. Although the city’s numerous attractions couldn’t all be enjoyed in one or two days, a weekend in Alex is surely enough to add a pep in your step when you head back to work on Sunday. Here are 3 ways to enjoy “the city of memory”.
Marvel at Nature
Have some hummus Al-sham (or ice cream if you’re a fan of Amr Diab and condone eating ice cream in winter) as you enjoy the scenery and the smell of the sea from Alexandria’s beautiful Corniche. Take a Hantour ride over Stanley Bridge or check out the bustling street vendors selling all kinds of knick-knacks from accessories to sunglasses and books!
Head to the Montazah Gardens for some scenery. Explore the unique plants at its multiple greenhouses, take a boat ride for a view of the garden on the relaxing lull of the water. Witness beautiful Florentine-inspired architecture and the life of royalty as you check out the Montazah Palace, King Farouk’s favorite summer destination.
Absorb Some Culture
There’s a reason Micheal Haag calls Alexandria “the city of memory”. The city has a rich history and is one of the most multi-cultural spots in Egypt. The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a must-see. It’s not just beautifully constructed. Moreover, it contains millions of books, 6 specialized libraries – including ones for the visually impaired and for children and young people. It also has 4 museums, and a planetarium! Another must-see is The Citadel of Qaitbey which currently holds a naval museum. Also, the island-like area leading up to it is the perfect spot for an ice cream snack with a sea view.
You can also take some aesthetic pictures in front of the beautifully white Italian-style National Museum of Alexandria. A museum that’s home to a plethora of monuments from different epochs of Egyptian history. Make sure to also pass by Kom El-Dikka, for a look at the remains of what was once ancient Roman life and Abu Al-Abbas El-Mursi Mosque for some beautiful architecture.
Satisfy Your Cravings
Of course, Alexandria is famous for its variety of places to eat. You can’t go there and not eat fish from Abu-Qir, Kebda Eskandarany from Awlad Al-Fallah at m7atet Al-raml, and the delectable cheesy concoctions of Alban Swesra at Port Said street and of course, the amazing cuisine of the famous Greek Club restaurant. For some delectable Roz bel Laban and Om Ali, head to El-Sheikh Wafiq at Ras El-Tin.
Certainly a day-long trip to Alexandria will give you all the reasons why it’s a source of inspiration for so many artists. Its rich culture, its beautiful sights, and its mouth-watering restaurants make it the perfect spot for a weekend getaway. So go on, get to planning!
