An ideal Friday night would consist of a bunch of junk food and streaming shows on Netflix. With the new Lost in Space reboot, Netflix has given us another reason to stay at home during the weekend. The show follows the adventures of the Robinson family after they crash-land on an alien planet, fighting against all odds to survive and escape. The show stars Molly Parker, Toby Stephens, and a group of talented young actors Taylor Russell, Maxwell Jenkins, and Mina Sundwall. We had a chance to meet this multi-talented cast at Comic Con in Dubai to chat more about this epic reboot.
If you were actually going to colonize another planet what would you take from Earth to show aliens?
Taylor Russell: I probably take a collection of music, I think this is something I would like to keep sacred.
Maxwell Jenkins: I would bring my film camera so I can document a lot of things, and maybe teach aliens how to work a camera if they don’t already have holographic cameras.
Mina Sundwall: I would probably bring books or a pocket knife.
What do you love about your character?
Maxwell Jenkins: I like how Will Robinson was able to look past the scary outside of the robot.They both look like polar opposites but they are in the same social situation: they don’t feel like they belong. I think that them coming together, and working through being lost in space together, really sends a message that I hope people who don’t fit in or people who do fit in can interact with each other.
Mina Sundwall: Something that drew me to Penny from the very beginning is that she is very genuine, she never hides behind a mask or filter for anybody else. I am in total admiration to her ability to stay true to herself.She has a lot of qualities that I aspire to be more like.
Taylor Russell: I love that Judy is very determined, strong-willed and stubborn in a lot of good ways. She never hesitates to do the right thing –that’s a very admirable quality.
What drew you to your characters and the project as a whole?
Molly Parker: We liked the Robinsons because they’re flawed; they are not this idealized nuclear American family.
Toby Stephens: I think both of us related to the family in the script and really liked them, therefore the stakes of them surviving we’re quite.
How do you think the new reboot of Lost in Space is different from other versions?
Molly Parker: You can’t really recreate what they did in the sixties; it was so specific to that time. It is quite an aspirational show because at the heart of it is this family that really loves each other.As opposed to some dystopian idea of the future, I think it tries to actually find a place that is more fun.
Who do you think is the real hero in the show?
Toby Stephens: I think the whole family is heroic because they are trying to overcome their own personal problems. All of them are forced to confront their own fears as well survive in this hostile environment.
