Zeina Elalamy: A Journey to the Top of Africa. In the world of professional volleyball, success is rarely just about the power of a spike or the precision of a serve. It is defined by resilience, the ability to overcome personal hardship, and an unwavering commitment to a goal. Zeina Elalamy, the star hitter for Al Ahly’s women’s volleyball team and a key player for the Egyptian national team, has proven that greatness is a product of both talent and relentless, year-after-year labor.
A Lifelong Passion
Zeina’s journey began long before the roar of the crowds. “I started volleyball when I was 5 years old,” she reflects.
“I don’t remember my first time touching the ball, but I felt it was my thing and I belonged to this place.”
That early sense of belonging was nurtured by her parents, who became the bedrock of her career. “They were always encouraging me. Even when I didn’t want to go to training, they were the ones supporting me to keep going.”
Beyond Natural Talent
While many recognize Zeina as one of Egypt’s most dangerous scorers, she is the first to dismiss the idea that talent alone is enough. “Talent is there, but it is never enough,” she explains. “Without persistence and hard work on my weaknesses, I wouldn’t be where I am today.” Over the years, that is exactly what I did.”
This dedication led her to professional heights, including a transformative stint in the Portuguese league with Vitória Guimarães.
“The Zeina who traveled to Portugal is one person; the one who returned to Egypt is a totally different person,” she notes. “I passed by a lot of hardships before traveling, and I was losing my confidence. That chance to play in Europe changed everything.”
The Path to the African Title
Reflecting on Al Ahly’s recent historic victory, where they clinched the African women’s volleyball club Championship, Zeina admits the path was far from easy.
“The championship this year was hard. We had four local champions to compete against, and we were preparing intensely. Every match was unique.”
The victory was especially sweet for Zeina, who had set a personal benchmark at the start of the season. “I was surprised that I was named the best player, but it was a goal I had set for myself. I wrote it down at the beginning of the season. Even when I was sick, I was pushing hard to participate because I wanted to reach this.”
A Message to the Next Generation
Zeina Elalamy: A Journey to the Top of Africa. When asked what she would say to the five year old version of herself, Zeina’s advice is both a warning and a promise:
“I would tell her: continue. The journey is long and it’s not easy, but you need to continue, believe in yourself, and don’t be afraid of anything.”
Zeina Elalamy’s story is a testament to the fact that when you pair natural talent with the courage to step into the unknown, there is no limit to what you can achieve. She remains not just a champion on the court, but an inspiration for every young athlete watching from the sidelines.
