Layal on Music, Identity, and Blending Sa‘idi Sounds with Pop

Layal on music, identity, and blending Sa‘idi sounds with pop. Layal is an Egyptian singer and songwriter based in London, carving out a sound that effortlessly blends self-expression with contemporary pop and alternative influences, documenting her inner world.

Drawing from her Egyptian roots and British upbringing, her music reflects a dual identity that shows up not only in her sound but also in her aesthetic, performance style, and storytelling. From open mics in London to recording her own original music, Layal’s journey is one of persistence, self-belief, and constantly choosing creativity, even when it felt risky.

When the Dream First Took Shape

Music has always been part of Layal’s life. As a child, she imagined herself on stage long before she knew how that dream could become a profession.

“Ever since I was young, watching Disney, I wanted to be a superstar, a pop star, a singer, but I didn’t know how to make it a profession,” she says. “When I was in college, reality hit. I felt like I had to get a job, and music would only ever be a hobby,” adds Layal.

That mindset shifted after she moved to London, where she found herself immersed in a community of creatives pursuing similar ambitions.

“When I moved to London, I realized so many people were trying to achieve the same thing. There were many creative opportunities, and suddenly this path felt real,” she explains.

‘Ahla Sahra’: Sa‘idi Grooves and Personal Connection

Layal’s latest song, Ahla Sahra, draws inspiration from Sa‘idi musical traditions. She explains that despite our traditions often described as modest, Sa‘idi culture is deeply expressive, especially through music. Layal reconnects with heritage while reimagining it through her own lens.

“When people think of Egypt, they usually think of Pharaohs,” Layal says. “But we have so many cultures. I was really drawn to Sa‘idi culture because of its festive culture. Celebrations are full of decorations, ornaments, colors, dancing, songs, and music.”

Layal shares what Ahla Sahra means to her, and the message it carries for women.

“It’s about having the confidence to go after what you want. There will always be people criticizing you, but you have to believe in your potential.” Layal adds, “The song is rebellious. I’m expressing that I’ll do what I want, and I don’t care what people think.”

Inspirations from Everyday Life

For Layal, songwriting begins with conversation and genuine human connection. Her creative process is closely tied to the world around her.

“My inspiration comes from my surroundings, the people around me, and everything happening in the world,” she says. “I love talking to people, listening to their opinions, and hearing their stories.”

Living a Dual Identity

Rather than choosing between cultures or genres, Layal allows the duality to coexist in her music. Listening to music is a daily ritual for Layal, one she treats as both discipline and joy.

“I don’t want to be tied down to one genre or one sound,” she explains. “I want people to hear a song and immediately say, ‘Oh, this is Layal.’” “I’m deeply connected to the Egyptian music scene, while physically immersed in Britain’s music scene, going out to live shows and listening to jazz, blues, and R&B. I take the elements that resonate with me and weave them into my own music,” Layal adds.

Looking Ahead

As Layal’s sound evolves, so does her vision for long-term creative independence. She is increasingly focused on understanding the business side of music.

“I’m learning more about the music business because eventually I want to take full control of my work,” she says. “I want to have my own label and manage my songs, and later support and manage other artists.”

She also hopes to create spaces that bring people together through music.

“I want to curate events where people can come together for live music and leave having learned something new,” she adds.

At the heart of Layal’s artistry is her commitment to her vision that expresses her fully, honoring her roots while carving her own path forward. Blending cultures, genres, and lived experiences, she continues to build a sound that feels hers unmistakably, driven by curiosity, confidence, and a belief that music can be both personal and powerfully shared.
