Eid is upon us, and we know we’ve already got to start thinking about how to lose our Ramadan weight, but not before we’re done with Eid goodies! Kahk, Ghorayeba, delicious Petit Four and Cookies, we haven’t had a proper breakfast for an entire month an we plan on devouring all those delicious, buttery pastries to make up for it.
We know we’re raining on everyone’s parade, but have you ever wondered how many calories there are in Eid pastries?
“The worst of all is the silent killer. The tiny little piece of butter that we call Ghurayeba. Ghurayeba is mostly made out of butter, there’s no need to pretend otherwise.”
Kahk
Brace yourselves, the answer ranges between a mere 100 calories (which isn’t a lot in comparison to other cookies), and a jaw-dropping 500 calories! This depends on how the kahk is made. The more the butter and shortening used, the more calories there will be in kahk.
Perhaps one could have their kahk and immediately exercise? Or start another fast in order to cleanse one’s system from all that cholesterol? Perhaps our Eid spent by the beach should be spent in the sun, trying to “burn” them calories from the delicious kahk.
Now, the number varies not only depending on the ingredients, but also the “stuffing” of kahk. So if you’re into kahk with nuts or ‘Agameya, you’re in for more calories.
Cookies and Petit Four
That’s not all. There is also cookies and petit four. As if we didn’t have enough Egyptian pastries to make us gain weight, those Western ones managed to weave their ways through our holidays and make them more delicious, and more fattening. It’s only fair to mention that one cookie has 70-80 calories and one petit four has 60 calories, which is nothing when compared to Kahk or Ghurayeba. Speaking of which…

Ghurayeba
The worst of all is the silent killer. The tiny little piece of butter that we call Ghurayeba. Ghurayeba is mostly made out of butter, there’s no need to pretend otherwise. The trick is to use all this butter and still have it come out all creamy and soft. This is something all Egyptian mothers are experts at, and is one of the main reasons for child obesity, we believe. Ghurayeba has an average of 160-250 calories. This might pale in comparison to the kahk, but keep in mind that while one piece of kahk is around 70gm, one piece of ghurayeba is around 30gm.
Why not go for the delicious pastries? It’s a special occasion. Everything in moderation is okay. You can have kahk, ghurayeba and cookies for breakfast on the first day of Eid, and then eat healthy for the rest of the day. Ramadan weight or not, we’ve all earned some kahk!
