Abu Bakr Shawky’s Hajjan is a breath of fresh air. The camel-racing background and the picturesque Saudi scenery add exceptional spices to a mundane recipe, creating a heartwarming coming-of-age film with Saudi flavor.

Hajjan, or camel jockey, tells the tale of a strong bond between humans and animals. Matar comes from a long line of camel jockeys. When his older brother falls and is killed during a camel race, Matar is faced with a life-altering decision. He is supposed to move in with his uncle in the city while his camel, Hofara, is sold for meat. But Matar refuses to abandon his Hofara. Instead, he becomes a jockey and works for a ruthless racing baron. Soon, he and Hofara must go on the run together, making a life-threatening voyage through the desert in search of freedom and a better life.

Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival, Hajjan offers a slice of the Saudi culture. Not only does it explore camel racing culture, but it also how male-dominated the culture is. The only women in the film are the owner’s wife and step-daughter. But, they have immense and impactful roles in the movie, and they are forces that drive the story.

The incredible team:

Shawky’s second feature is primarily filmed in Tabuk on Saudi’s Red Sea coast, which highlights the beautiful landscapes. In addition, cinematographer Gerry Vasbenter plays with the natural desert light to enhance the visual appeal of the film. Through the brilliance of Shawky and Vasbenter, the viewer is able to experience the camel races and enjoy their thrills. The screenplay is written by Saudi Arabian Mufarrij Almajfel and Egyptian Omar Shama, with visual effects by Syrian-French Chadi Abo and music by the talented French composer Amine Bouhafa.

Through the ups and downs of the races, betrayal, kindness, and unexpected turns, Hajjan becomes the story of a young boy navigating his own path and learning what it means to be a man.
