The Administrative court ruled today that Tiran and Sanafir islands are, in fact, Egyptian! This renders the agreement signed between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, which declared the two islands part of Saudi Arabia, void. The lawsuit was filed by lawyer and former presidential candidate Khaled Ali shortly after news of the agreement between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The controversy that surrounded the signing of this agreement lasted for months, sparking protests in its wake. Egyptians were suddenly divided into those who defended Egypt’s historical right in these islands, and criticized the president making such a decision without going through the proper channels; and those who saw no harm in the Saudi Arabia taking over the islands.
“We also are unsure what the mainstream media, who defended the decision to “give the islands to Saudi” so passionately, will do now”
We wonder what will happen to those who were arrested during protests against that same agreement, as well as “Atfaal Shaware3” who were arrested shortly after making a satirical video making fun of the decision to simply forego Egyptian islands to Saudi Arabia. We also are unsure what the mainstream media, who defended the decision to “give the islands to Saudi” so passionately, will do now. Who will be at fault here, the Egyptian government, or the Egyptian judiciary? Both seem to be considered without fault by the public, but someone needs to be held accountable.
