To My Son, directed by and starring Dhafer L’Abidine, offers an introspective look into the Saudi Diaspora. In fact, it invites the audience to learn about Saudi culture as the characters dive into their story.
Feisal is a Saudi man with British citizenship living in London with his seven-year-old son, Adam. After the death of his beloved wife, he decides to return to Saudi Arabia. So, he quits his job, packs up his life, and takes his son back to their homeland. Feisal has not returned to his homeland since the day he left his town of Abha, and his son has never been to Saudi Arabia. His two younger sisters, and his younger brother are eager and thrilled to finally be reunited with their brother. But, their father, Ibrahim, is holding a grudge for leaving the whole family to pursue his dreams. Ibrahim doubts Feisal’s motive to return to Saudi Arabia. Feisal is keeping a huge secret about his return, a secret that will forever change their family.
The film had its world premiere on December 3 at the Red Sea International Film Festival. It was met with a warm embrace. The cross-cultural performer immerses the viewers in the picture-perfect scenes and makes them empathize with the characters. Since the film is primarily set in the Abha, the audience sees the natural beauty of the country. The lush, mountainous city is beloved by many Saudis, but for non-Saudis, it is a hidden gem that has not been explored, until ‘To My Son’.
Themes Discussed in the Film:
The film does an excellent job of exploring different themes evenly and simultaneously. It raises a moral dilemma; How much of your individual happiness are you willing to give up for your family? A question that is considered taboo in the Middle East and North Africa region. It spotlights the family dynamic of a Saudi home; and how women are more willing to sacrifice their dreams to please their fathers. Also, it shows the process of reconnecting yourself with your own culture and the importance of holding your own to these traditions.
To My Son takes the viewer on a joyous trip that introduces and familiarizes them with Saudi culture from their Landscapes to their family dynamics.
